READS! Curriculum
The materials used are based on research-based tutoring programs and encompass the following principles:
- Simplicity: It can be taught by non-certified tutors with training and support.
- Systematic & explicit: It teaches children to decode (read) and encode (spell) words, sentences, and stories in a way that makes sense to them. Each lesson builds on the next one, and students master one level before attempting the next.
- Consistency: From session to session, the level of difficulty will increase; however, the instructional procedures are predictable to the child.
The Making Meaning, KidzLit and SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phoneme Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words) program address 6 essential components of early literacy:
- Phonemic awareness (Ability to hear sounds within words)
- Phonics (Sound/Symbol relationship)
- Fluency (Speed & quality of oral reading)
- Vocabulary
- Comprehension
- Text to Life connections
