Venice YMCA Sports Programs
The YMCA is proud to announce our new Sports Director, Joe Whelton. Mr. Whelton is a graduate of the University of Connecticut, class of 1978. In college, Joe had a 4 year basketball scholarship. He was captain of the men's team in 1978 and received the Bob Cousy Award for the best point guard in college. Mr. Whelton has also been a professional basketball coach for 25 years in Europe. He has worked as a National Coach in England, Switzerland and Germany.
Coach Joe's Basketball Academy
Coach Joe and his staff are proud to announce the first ever Basketball Academy at the Venice YMCA! The goal of the academy is to teach children to play basketball "the right way" including fundamentals, sportsmanship and plenty of fun. The basketball Academy will feature:
- Year-round play in 3 sessions: September - November, November - February, March - May
- Summer basketball camps
- Priority in scheduling Private Lessons with Coach Joe
Private Basketball Lessons
Coach Joe is now offering private basketball lessons - individual and small group.The lessons will focus on basketball fundaments: dribbling, passing, shooting and agility work. But make no mistake, adults of all levels will benefit from the focus on fundamentals as much as kids will.
Coach Joe says the goal of the one - hour lessons is to teach people how to "play the game the right way."
