School-Based Lesson Plans
Beginning the second week of September, 2008 a team of physical education teachers hired by the South County Family YMCA will start teaching a specially designed, 9-lesson curriculum to third, fourth and fifth grade students at Garden, Taylor Ranch and Venice Elementary schools and Laurel Nokomis School.
The goal of the curriculum is to educate and encourage healthy behaviors leading to the prevention and decreased incidence of overweight and obesity in children. However, children cannot make all the changes by themselves. Parents and families must all get on-board living healthy lifestyles if anyone is to be truly successful. We hope the messages being promoted to the students in the classrooms will be taken home to parents and families and embraced.
5-2-1-0
Our teachers decided to use the 5-2-1-0 campaign to help shape the curriculum that they have designed. 5-2-1-0 is a campaign originally developed by the Maine Center for Public Health and has been used by many states in the nation as the cornerstone for healthy lifestyle promotion. Lessons Taught in the Schools
Below is an outline of the 9-lesson curriculum that our four teachers and registered dietitian designed. Each week, one lesson will be delivered to every student in third, fourth and fifth grades. Students will also keep a scorecard at home with ideas, tips and assignments to help students and their families incorporate physical activity and healthy nutrition into their lives. Parents, remember to sign the scorecards every week to keep tabs on your child's progress and support them as they make healthy lifestyle changes.
