Medically-Based Wellness
Lose Weight in 2008!!
Well, it’s that time of year again. It’s time to ring in the holidays, celebrate to excess, and make a resolution to never do it again. The most common New Year’s Resolution is to lose weight, and for a good reason: according to the Center for Disease Control, the prevalence of obesity has increased 74 percent since 1991. The weight loss industry has thrived on this, inventing new pills and creams to help you lose weight. But is it working? Statistics say no: 95 percent of dieters will regain their lost weight in one to five years. So, what can we do to make sure that the weight comes, and stays, off? The answer is simple, and it’s not found in a pill. It’s all about LIFESTYLE CHANGE.
Here, at the South County YMCA, we understand that weight loss is important to some of our members, and we know that it’s hard. So we have developed a program to teach participants how to eat healthy and exercise, not just for a few months, but for the rest of your life. Our 12 Week Weight Loss Program encourages small changes in diet that add up to pounds lost. We provide an effective, personalized workout that you’ll not only be able to do, but you’ll start to enjoy. We’ll get you excited about exercise, and provide you with the necessary tools to continue on with a healthy diet, even after the program has ended. With our staff consisting of a registered dietician, an exercise physiologist, and a cardiac nurse, we provide qualified people to guide you on your journey to weight loss…and a healthier life.
If you, or someone you know, can benefit from losing weight, make an appointment to see our exercise physiologist, Christine Vish, to assess your physical fitness, and get you started on your way to a healthier, happier you in the new year!
Medically-Based Wellness Philosophy
In our Medically-Based Wellness (MBW) program, the South County Family YMCA offers high quality, highly reputable clinical programming to our members with special medical needs and weight management concerns. In addition to health enhancement and prevention, the MBW program offers rehabilitation, pain management and a hopeful decrease of further progression of diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, cancer and heart disease. The goals of our weight loss program are not only significant reduction of body fat, but also providing education and support to ensure success for a lifetime.

The MBW program takes an individual approach to our members’ needs. Each program participant receives a personal program created by our staff exercise physiologists and dietitians that considers individual goals, physical limitations, physician recommendations and personal preferences.
Participants undergo thorough physical and behavioral assessments prior to beginning a program so that both our staff and the participant understand the parameters of the program design. Individuals meet on-on-one with their exercise physiologist and dietitian as well as attend group fitness classes and nutrition counseling sessions. Lectures, field trips and support meetings are important parts of our programs providing education and support.
People with debilitating conditions and weight issues do not have to be a victim of their bodies. Our MBW program uses sound exercise, diet and mind/body techniques to teach empowerment and personal control leading to a healthy, happy, less painful life.
